Lake Myvatn Conservation
Area
This is one of the top tourist
destinations in Iceland due to its
wealth of natural diversity and
stunning beauty. Among its main
attractions is the Waterfall of the
Gods, where the cascading waters are
the most powerful in Europe. The
lake is home to the largest variety
of ducks in the world. The diversity
of the landscape, as all across
Iceland, is unparallel to any other
with its volcanic craters and lava
fields as well as crystal clear
lakes.
Westmann Islands
Surrounded by the sparklingly clear
waters of Icelandic seas, which are
home to an impressive community of
whales, these islands are nature
getaways like no other. The
archipelago is home to the newest
island in the world, formed in 1963
from a volcanic eruption which broke
through the waves in a dramatic
burst.
Snaefellsnes Peninsula
The Snaefellsnes Peninsula is an
area teeming with curious lava
caves, stunning waterfalls and
temperature-perfect hot springs. The
towering glacier which can be
spotted from Reykjavik is one of the
areas most spectacular features
dominating the landscape.
Thingvellir
This is the site of the world’s
first parliament and probably the
most historic site in all of
Iceland. The Althing, the beloved
government of the first Icelandic
settlers, ruled here throughout the
golden age of Icelandic history. The
area is also home to Iceland’s
largest lake, the perfect location
for fishing, while the national park
here offers great hiking
opportunities.
Blue Lagoon
The Blue Lagoon is among the major
top attractions in Iceland. It is
renowned worldwide for its water
temperatures and bed of white Silica
mud, which are said to have healing
powers and can offer relief for skin
problems.
Vidimyri Turf Church
This strange and fascinating
building made from turf and
driftwood has been standing since
1834. As there are few trees in
Iceland, the people of the time made
use of the natural resources that
were available to construct their
parish church, which is still in use
today.
Skogar Musem
This museum hosts a collection of
over 6,000 artefacts spanning
Iceland’s interesting history, with
displays and information.
Reykjavik Old Town
The Old Town is the centre of the
vast majority of Reykjavik’s
activity, with beautiful
architecture and a wealth of shops
and boutiques. It is also a busy hub
of night-time activity; take a
stroll as the sun is setting when
the skyline is a mix of burnt reds
and vibrant yellows.
Reykjavik Municipal Art
Museum
The museum offers visitors a look at
Icelandic and international art by
both well established and
contemporary artists, and is a
centre for events such as concerts,
lectures and some of the best of
Icelandic exhibitions.
Mount EsjaThe easy hike to the
summit of this mountain overlooking
the city is worth every step for the
spectacular views of the Reykjavik
cityscape.
