Shopping in Iceland
Reykjavik is arguably one of the
best places for shopping in Europe.
The main shopping district is a
compact area in the old city with
easy and efficient access, and a
range of outlets of international
standard.
The main places for the best
selection of shopping opportunities
are the downtown area, centred on
Laugavegur shopping street, and
Kringlan Mall. In regard to high
fashion and designer wear,
Reykjavik’s prices are almost always
more reasonable than in New York,
while the 15 per cent tax refund for
foreigners means you may find some
very alluring bargains.
The charming and atmospheric centre
for the best of Rekjavik’s shopping,
Laugavegur is a long street with
what seems like an endless array of
boutiques, fashion houses, classy
malls and designer stores. Westward
from the top of this stretch of
shopping heaven, there are a number
of couture fashion stores and
exclusive boutiques.
Farther along Laugavegur you will
find Sautjan fashion emporium with
an extensive range of stores for
men, women and children from such
designers as Calvin Klein, Paul
Smith and more interestingly, Kookai.
GK is one of Iceland’s most trendy
outlets with its men’s range hosted
on Laugavegur, while its women’s
store is located in the Kringlan
Mall. 39 Brep is a shoe shopper’s
paradise and if you need to be the
most fashionable camping traveller,
head for Kron.
Bankastraeti street houses the
Saevar Karl interior design
boutique, with fabulous furnishings
and an art gallery, while the
renowned Italian designer Marx Mara
has a store close by. If you’re
wardrobe is sufficiently stocked,
this wondrous world has much more on
offer from accessories and leather
goods to books and CDs.
Skolavotdustigur is a chic street
lined with classy boutiques, gourmet
shops, design studios for jewellery
and a host of interesting art
galleries. This atmospheric area is
perfect for outstanding window
shopping or if your budget allows,
indulge in some unique artworks at
prices that are hard to beat.
The Kringlan shopping centre is
located a little outside town but
has an excellent bus service from
the old city. It is open seven days
a week and houses an impressive
collection of stores and boutiques,
with BOSS, Karen Millen and DKNY
among some of the top names. One of
its most impressive stores is Utilif,
a large sports and
outdoor leisure store with a high
class range of outdoor wear.
Kolaportid, an indoor market, is a
day out in itself; open weekdays
from 11:00 to 17:00. Here, you will
find great bargains in everything
from traditional Icelandic woolens
to new and used CDs and shoes. Its
food court is filled with mouth
watering delights of Icelandic
specialties such as cured shark and
pickled herring.
