The Blue Lagoon (Bláa Lónið) (located south of the Keflavik-Reykjavik road, 15 km from Keflavik and 40 km from Reykjavik). The Lagoon attracts more than 250,000 visitors every year in search of health, relaxation and recreation. The Lagoon is heated with excess water from the nearby power station which uses geothermal water from boreholes reaching depth of over 2000 meters.
The water from the power station is too too salty for house heating so instead it's used to heat spring water. At the outlet point the water from the power station, with a temperature of about 70 C (158 F) and salt concentration approximately 2/3 of the sea, has formed a lagoon.
The Blue Lagoon is open every day, all year round, and towel and swimming costumes can be hired. Refreshments and souvenirs are on sale along with a new line of bath crystals and other natural skin care products from the Blue Lagoon. A dip in the Blue Lagoon can be fitted in with range of other leisure options on the Reykjanes peninsula, such as hiking and walking, golf, sailing, horse riding, bird watching and sea and lake angling.
